Why have women been treated so badly?

Ever since Genesis was written women have been vilified by the patriarchy. You would think that we would have been appreciated for our integral roll in humanity instead we have historically been demeaned and oppressed by men. Even today in many countries around the world a woman can be publicly punished for looking a man in the eyes. Can somebody explain this paradox to me?
