What is the most PAINFUL respiratory malfunction/disease?

Does anyone have a clue? It's for one of my Victorian stories. Pnemonia? Asthma? Pluerisy? I would please just like some kind of malfunction of the lungs or something that makes breathing agonizingly painful and feels like profound suffering. I know it's grim, but it's for a story. Please tell me if you know. Much appreciated.
