How to file for custody and implement a restraining order without a lawyer?

I am an 18 year old mother of 2. My first son, Romeo (25 months), was the product of when I was 15 (he was born shortly after my 16th birthday). The man who fathered him was a family friend, who is several years older me. He will be released from jail in a few weeks, and I want to be prepared when he is. I live in New York City, and I would like to know how to file for my son's custody and implement a restraining order against the man. If I can do it without a lawyer, this would be great, as I am an undergraduate psychology major at Colombia U and my husband is in law school at NYU...needless to say, with tuition and children, we are short on money and would like to try and do this without a lawyer, if it is possible.
