'Correct' word to use?

Been seeing on the internet recently a small surge of dislike towards the term , preferring the words gay or *shudders* queer (not a chance I'm using that one btw). Is this a widespread thing? None of my...those kind of...friends know about it. I don't understand the problem with it being too clinical as then you have to get rid of heteroual, , sapiens etc. :) or the problem with it being used by some anti-gay groups (Just man up and don't let them ruin it). Please explain further if you can.
