Why cant i get OpenOffice to run SpellCheck!?

For some reason, Open office wont run a grammar or spell check...It doesnt underline words when misspelled..ive tried looking under all the options but to no avail...is there something wrong with the software..i dont have money to spend on Microsoft word...help me!
