Is it true that cereal is bad for you?

I'm trying to lose weight, and I've heard that you aren't supposed to eat cereal. Is this true or just a myth? I only eat cereals like bran flakes, raisin bran, g nuts, and cheerios...if cereal isn't good for you, what are some healthy breakfast foods that don't take long to make?
